Trinidad Pino Fuentes, the mother of María Rosa de las Mercedes Casanova, was born variously in Caracas or Maricaibo, Venezuela
[U.S. Census records, 1850–1880]. It is likely that she was, at least, living in Maricaibo before she emigrated to Costa Rica, since she is described a native of that city in the baptismal record of her daughter, Rosa, in 1846
[Archivo Eclesiástico de la Curia Metropolitana, Rollo SJ-143 Item 2, CB#29, F. 385, Asiento 47].
It is not known where, or how, Trinidad Pino Fuentes met Antonio Casanova, nor where, or when, they were married. What is clear, however, is that the family moved from Venezuela sometime before 1834; that they were in Costa Rica by 1839 or 1840; and that they left Costa Rica after 1847 and arrived in California sometime before March 1850, when Antonio Casanova died in Los Angeles County
[1850 U.S. Census Mortality Schedule]. The most likely date for their arrival in Los Angeles is 1848.
